The OTR Guide:
Old Time Radio Archival Resource & Digital Museum

Provenance

The provenance of a vintage radio broadcast is the history of its physical survival and chain of custody, from the moment it was broadcast over the airwaves to its modern digital preservation. The study of audio provenance is a foundational pillar of radio history. Tracking how an episode survived informs our scholarly understanding of the artifact itself: its audio fidelity, its completeness, and its place within the historic timeline of broadcasting and private media collecting.

The study of provenance is also critical for historical accuracy and file integrity. Researching the lineage of a circulating audio file often uncovers broken chains of custody caused by poor archiving, unauthorized editing, or mislabeled home-recorded tapes.

While gaps in the timeline of an obscure program are normal, finding evidence of an altered network line recording, a misdated AFRS syndication run, or a compressed commercial mp3 masquerading as a pristine master requires careful redocumentation. As a community of historical researchers, our goal is to correct past archival errors.

The resources cataloged on these pages represent the tools used to audit these collections, resolve historical discrepancies, and establish a clear, verifiable lineage for the golden age of broadcasting.
